In 1860, a young twenty-year-old Auvergne, Mr. Jean-Marie Chanut, immigrated to New York to seek his fortune. After trying his hand at different trades, he joined a skin glove trading house.
A few years later, in 1880 , he founded his own glove trading house in New York: Maison Jean-Marie Chanut and created a factory in Paris. Jean-Marie Chanut will initially offer gloves only to his Parisian and New York customers.
